I am pleased to announce the AX Ubuntu Theme for Saucy Salamander is available for download. AX is a modification of the Ambiance Theme with tweaks and polish added for an improved user experience.
Overview
One of the primary design elements of a GTK theme is color. The challenge in selecting a color is the color accuracy of computer screens are broadly unreliable. The orange on one screen may become red on another.
As Ubuntu is all about orange, a design goal of AX was to select an orange which displays equally well if the color accuracy of the display is not so good.
Many if not most of today’s technology designs are flat. Google’s Android and Chrome themes are generally flat, Apple’s new iOS 7 theme follows this trend, and a design goal of AX was to be more flat.
The above screen shot of AisleRiot’s Klondike solitaire shows the window title bar and tool bars are themed dark, contours are kept to a minimum, and menu high lights are displayed in orange. The text is themed white for good contrast.
Many themes use shades of a single color to add variety but for this version I decided to step out of the box and use different compliments instead. The above screen shot of the Ubuntu sound control and the progress bar displayed to the right show this in action.
I like traditional scroll bars and AX supports them as the screen shot of the Appearance Control widget demonstrates.
The final screen shot shows the File Manager in action.
